Pirts (Sauna) Museum – a place where the story of the Latvian pirts lives. A place where fire, wood and people meet.
The Sauna Museum is more than a museum – it is a place where history, traditions and living experience meet. Here, ancient saunas are not just exhibits – they still breathe, warm and tell about the lifestyle of our ancestors. Time flows differently here. The smell of old logs, the warmth of stones and the crackling of fire remind us of what has been important to people for centuries.
The museum features historical saunas from different regions of Latvia, each with its own character, construction methods and story. Here, every log wall, every stove stone and every object holds people’s stories. Stories about birth and growth, about work and celebrations, about silence, healing and being together. A sauna for a Latvian has never been just a building – it has been a place where not only the body, but also the mind and soul were cleansed.
In the museum, historical saunas regain their voice. They tell the story of ancient masters of the craft, of wisdom passed down from generation to generation, and of the close connection between man and nature. Here, history is not behind glass cases – it is alive, tangible and experiential.
During the tour, you can get to know the history of the Latvian sauna, learn about the importance of the sauna in everyday life and in honors, as well as discover the special world of the black or smoke sauna.
Everyone can not only learn, but also experience – enjoy a real smoke sauna ritual, feel the power of nature, the scent of plants and the healing peace of the sauna. The sauna museum is a place where the body regains strength, the mind becomes calmer and the soul finds balance.
Here, the Latvian pirts heritage is preserved and passed on so that it will continue to live on for generations to come.
We invite you to become a part of this story and experience bathhouse culture not only as history, but as a living heritage that still warms people – just like it did a hundred or more years ago.
